Career Path Financial Advisor – Students interested in earning a Business degree but not sure what the preferred career path is? Students often choose a career path based on passion, family history in the profession, earning a lot of money, knowing someone in the profession or interests learned from the course. The truth is that the student does not know this until he is in his first job and boss. The first career leader can break or build a career.

My first job in the United States after receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance was as a Billing Analyst in the Life Insurance division of the CIGNA Group (a third party regulator). Diane was a student who recruited me. In 1990, computers were still very new in many offices. Diane allowed me to try different ways to get the job done. I decided to program the billing system to send each insured a letter detailing the monthly bill. Diane quickly learned that I was more than a Billing Analyst and should pursue Financial Systems instead. I worked for Diane when I was in graduate school. Diane was a great leader and role model to help me discover my talent in Finance. I worked for ABB Nuclear Power after CIGNA as a Financial Systems Analyst focusing on sales forecasting and government proposals. Again, I use my financial knowledge to successfully make many offers over the years. Both CIGNA and ABB are public companies. I was blessed to have Diane and Ken (at ABB) as my leaders. They have both encouraged and guided me in my financial career.

This article is intended for students majoring, minoring or interested in Finance and wanting to be on a career path in Finance. There are two main tracks 1) Corporate Finance and 2) Consumer Finance.

The Benefits Of A Financial Advisor Career

Corporate Finance is concerned with the management of financial statements, capital investment forecasting and financial re-engineering. In Corporate Finance, a public company is different from a private company. Publicly traded companies include companies like Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Tesla, Delta Airline, etc. The Corporate Finance function is more complex than regulatory compliance.

However, proprietary companies are as difficult as publicly traded companies. Some privately held companies are as large as a publicly traded company. For example, companies such as Chick-fil-A, Dell, Pricewatercoopers (PWC), Publix, Deloitte, Enterprise, Fidelity, Meijer, Loves Travel Stops, etc. all are household names in the United States. Auditing bank reconciliation can be a daunting task for many corporate finance teams.

In order to be successful on a career path in Corporate Finance, consider obtaining two professional licenses that can place students in Financial Officer. Certified Treasury Professional https://ctpcert.afponline.org/ or Financial Planning and Analysis Specialist http://fpacert.afponline.org/.

The field of Consumer Finance has become very important in the last ten years out of necessity. Additionally, there is a decline as the Boomer generation exits the industry. There are two ways in Consumer Finance 1) Institutional and 2) Retail.

At the end of the day, there are many opportunities in the Finance career path. When the culture is right, students can have a rewarding career. I spent 15 years in Corporate Finance before moving into Consumer Finance specializing in successful planning for private businesses. I’m probably one of the few people who go through Corporate and Customer Service. I am grateful to have had wonderful bosses in the past who shaped my career.
