I love neon colors, silly monsters and sometimes even lucky enough to find them still in the box. The fact is that the masks are very fragile so not many have survived from the 60s and 70s. This ‘rare’ aspect makes me love them even more. It also makes me want to add to my collection by making my own vintage DIY Halloween masks.
How To Make Halloween Mask Cookie Pops
Over the years and through many flea markets I have amassed a huge collection of retro Halloween masks, many from companies like Ben Cooper and Collegeville. Since these masks A) were on children, the boxes were probably joyfully opened and thrown away and B) the children broke things, including plastic Halloween masks.
Plastic masks are easy to find on Halloween. In the low season they can be found in most of the large artisan chains. Cover your mask with Paris plaster. The masks are plastic and sticky, so this gives the clay something to stick to.
After the plaster layer, apply air-dried clay. You can also use papier mache. Use clay to increase features and make your DIY mask scarier. I was making a wolf mask, so I needed bigger cheekbones and eyebrows.
Let the clay dry overnight to harden completely. Use sandpaper to smooth rough edges. Remember, this is a DIY-inspired vintage Halloween mask, so it doesn’t have to be perfect. You’re not rehearsing for next season a monster costume making a reality show.
Diy: Feathered Halloween Masks
Using craft paint make your own spooky monster mask. Most of my vintage Halloween masks are in bright colors, so I opted for neon green paint for the mask.
Using craft paint or paint markers will mask the features. My werewolf has funny teeth and long eyes. To each one of her, right?
Remember how I said boxes were rare and elusive when it comes to collecting vintage Halloween masks? I had to do that part too. Use a rough wood craft shop shadow box. Paint the shadow box black and let it dry.
While the paint is drying, make some quick wool pompoms. This step is not necessary, but I wanted my monster to be “hairy”. Glue your pompoms around the mask and into the box.

I shared these simple DIY Halloween masks a couple of years ago and many of you told me they used them as an easy activity for your kids’ school Halloween parties. Since we’re heading back to the Halloween season, I thought I’d repost so that even those of you who haven’t read in a few years can see them. You can download each mask design for free in the blue block below the video. Make sure you print them on cardstock or other heavy paper so they don’t tear.
These masks would be a great activity for a school Halloween party. The only cost is to buy cardstock (if your school doesn’t already have some) and rubber band. I used a 1/4 inch rubber band and a 15 inch piece was perfect for any school age mask. (The 1/4-inch rubber band I bought came in 3-yard packs, which means you get 7 pieces from each pack. At about $ 1.50 per pack, that means the elastic will cost about $. 6 for 28 masks.)

It is also a fun activity to do at home. The masks are easy to make and not bulky. We only used colored pencils, but you could use crayons, markers, or even paint, then add stickers or glitter if you like. My kids had friends when I printed all of these swatches and they all had a great time choosing their favorite mask and then decorating it to their liking.

Making papier mache on a balloon is an easy and fun technique and produces an area that can be cut into two mask bases and transformed into any animal or creature you can dream of. Cut corners of recycled food boxes (e.g. for cracks or grains) to create noses and ears, or horns and saw teeth.
Mix the flour and water until all the lumps are gone. It should be the consistency of a thin pancake batter.
Dip a strip of newspaper into the mixture, use two fingers to remove the excess and flatten onto the balloon. You can keep the balloon stable by placing it in a colander or bowl.

Continue to cover the balloon, crossing the strips in different directions. You can leave an opening around the knot. After you’ve covered the balloon, add another layer or two. Draw a line around the sphere vertically and cut it in half to create two mask bases. Cut an inch or so from the bottom (knot side).
