Fall in Texas stands for high school football and a state tradition: prom mom. Elaborate and much-loved accessories are worn back to school. This year, with COVID-19 postponing or altering the festivities, how is Mom’s work?

“I describe them as a bouquet exploding,” Newberry said. She spent years photographing high school students across Texas being carried by their mothers.

Imagine a large bouquet of artificial chrysanthemum, cover it with ribbons, braids, several yards of beads… maybe even a stuffed animal or a framed photo. Decades ago, the tradition began with simple florists giving welcome dates.

Preferences have also changed. Gina Waters, head of the Texas State Florists Association, originally started out in the flower business, bringing mothers home with fresh chrysanthemums. But today, he says, florists rarely take orders for them.

Not worrying about fresh flowers, Mom opened up the game to astute entrepreneurs. Many moms are now bred by specialized mom manufacturers, who sell their products on their own websites or on sites like Etsy.

“We found some really big moms,” said Shannon Hart Gonzalez, who runs Mums and Kisses, a custom shop for prom moms outside of Fort Worth. Their modest mothers cost $30, while more elaborate creations can cost as much as $500.

Your flamboyant mother of the year? “I have a request now for what we call a mommy dress,” she said. It is five feet wide and includes over 19,000 rhinestones, 13,000 faux pearls and a rotating bezel.

“This is something that completely wraps the girl in the front and in the back there’s a belt that goes from shoulder to hip,” Gonzalez said. “So the straps go from the hip to the ankle.”

Gonzalez started raising moms for friends about 15 years ago. Then, in 2016, her son needed a mother. When she saw the prices, she thought, “I can do better than that. I just opened an online store and they took off from there,” she explained.

She also needed income, and it was something she – and mothers like her – could do at home. Although Gonzalez expanded. A few years ago, she built a shop window and workshop next to her house.

The deal worked. In normal years, Gonzalez says Moms and Kisses can sell up to 400 orders. While mum about her exact earnings (pun intended), she said it covered most of her son’s first year of schooling – at a private school.

“When COVID arrived, it was shocking,” admitted Gonzalez. “We were hoping that things would end quickly and that it wouldn’t affect our mothers’ season. But unfortunately, it didn’t work out that way.”

Local Teenager’s Homecoming Mum Is One For The Record Books

Earlier this year, during her typical busy August-October season, Gonzalez said her sales were down 42% from last year.

Now, as Texas schools reopen and delay returns home, the drop is just 13%. Gonzalez intends to close that sales gap by the end of the year, as she said she’s heard that some schools may not have homecomings until December.

“I’m worried that COVID will last too long into the future and completely affect homecoming in the future. I hope it doesn’t kill tradition,” she said.

“Somehow mothers — or traditions in a way — can meet that basic emotional and spiritual need. And I think at this particular time, everyone could use a little more of that,” Newberry said.

If you went to high school in Texas, you’ve seen them: fancy faux chrysanthemums decorated with tinsel, lights, and plush mascots, with cascading ribbons and braids. Mothers — and garters, their male counterparts — are welcome staples across the state and a rite of passage for high school students. But the tradition’s origins are largely murky — and surprisingly, they’re not from Texas.

Prom moms are said to have originated in Texas during the 1930s, but the first known homecoming moms were used in Missouri, which also hosted the first homecoming football game in 1911. Some claim the tradition of wearing mothers – at that time made of chrysanthemums – began before the 1930s.

The flower’s timeless qualities led those who returned home to switch to artificial flowers, which were glamorized in the 1990s. Today, mums often include more than one flower and spread from the shoulders, with ribbons that descend to the feet, so that only the user’s head is visible. The brighter the better. The garters remained relatively tame in size, although they were often decorated in the same way. Spectacular displays can only be worn on the day of the fall homecoming game, never at the ball which is usually held the following night.

In 2012, she launched Mums Inc., an organization that now includes 145 working moms and 80 companies. The group allows mom makers across Texas to connect, share supplies and advise newbies. I have something called a “megaquad”, and it’s about the size of a body. It has four 7 1/2 inch flowers. It’s too long; goes to the floor. On these mums we do four or five braids, bows and lots of little additional details here and there that I add to each mum.

We’ve been preparing for this all year. If you care, it will start right after the season ends. You can have Christmas without the moms and in January go back to stocking up, cleaning up and getting ready for the season, and that goes on until the season starts.

We are not sure. Tradition is very much alive, especially among our seniors. Older people seek the same level of support as mothers. They won’t want to lose those memories. Parents will want some level of normalcy, regardless of whether there is a football game or a homecoming game. These kids depend on us to help them create memories.
