How Is Easter Determined

How Is Easter Determined – Easter Sunday 2021 won’t have any extremes, but overall it looks about right. But what determines when Easter is?

Easter 2021 is better than last year. The sun will be out and about, and the rain won’t bother the Charlotte area until the end of this week. We got down to 36 degrees this morning, which tied 2015 for the coldest start to Easter in 10 years.

Our highs in the 70s are close to average for an Easter Sunday in Charlotte, which averages about 71.4 degrees. This average is warmer than our typical April 4th average due to Easter falling on different dates between March and late April.

Snowiest: 2.7 inches (1940) These Easter folks woke up to a maximum snow depth of 3.0 inches since it started falling on Easter Eve.

Easter can last from March 22 to April 25. We won’t see another Easter date until 2245 at the earliest, but the last Easter date will appear again in 2038.

When Easter happens, it all depends on the full moon. Easter is always celebrated on the first Sunday after the first spring full moon. Spring began on March 20 and the first full moon of spring was the warm moon of March 28 (Sunday). So, a week later, April 4th is Easter. So for the earliest date of Easter to occur, March 22nd, spring and a full moon would have to occur on a Saturday, which would make Easter the following day, since that would be the following Sunday.

When Is Easter? The Lunar Festival That’s Determined By The Movements Of The Moon

The spring date may also change from a rare March 19 to March 20 and 21. But for convenience, the church has designated March 21 as the cemented spring day. Horst Rademacher, a seismologist at UC Berkeley, wrote to my friends there last weekend asking about the date of Easter:

Let me bother you with a question, which is probably useless for astronomers like you to answer. But neither Peggy nor I could find an answer anywhere. Here is the question:

Tomorrow (April 1) is Easter. According to the classical definition, Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. This makes sense because today is the full moon, which is the first full moon after the start of spring. And tomorrow is Sunday, so Easter.

However, today’s full moon occurred at 5:37 PDT. Let’s say the full moon would have occurred at 5:37 PM PDT. Applying the above definition from a purely Californian perspective, tomorrow would still be Easter. However, if we were in the Netherlands, Germany, or the Vatican, for that matter, the supposed full moon would occur the next day at 2:37 CEST. But because the next day (tomorrow) is Sunday, it cannot be Easter, because Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon. Therefore, Easter will fall on the following Sunday……

What Is The Spring Equinox?

Here’s the question: Do you know what time zone the full moon is measured in to define Easter? If you don’t know, your friend, the Vatican astronomer?

Nothing esoteric about it. This problem was known during the Age of Inquiry, the 16th century, and was an important part of the Gregorian calendar reform of 1582!

The short answer is this: in the Gregorian calendar, Easter is no longer defined as the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring. Instead, it is determined by a totally arbitrary formula that approximates this definition, making it correct for most, but not all, years of the 19-year Metonic lunar cycle.

In other words, we no longer have to rely on the moon to determine our religious holidays. In principle, we can define such holidays on Mars with its two moons… or anywhere else. (Even if the nuclear waste stored on the far side of the moon explodes, knocking the moon out of orbit and sending it, as well as the 311 inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha, hurtling uncontrollably into space – like in the 1970s TV show, “Space 1999”. “…)

When Is Easter?

(Thanks to Horst for asking the question and for giving me permission to quote and quote it here!) Easter is set as the first Sunday after the first full moon (Easter Full Moon) after the Wall of Silence. In 2022, the vernal equinox occurred on March 20, the next full moon is April 16. The first Sunday after that is this Sunday, April 17, and that’s Easter.

We know that the vernal equinox can vary by up to a day or so, but when you factor in the cycle of the moon, the date of Easter can really change.

For example, if the full moon is one day before the vernal equinox, Easter is at least another 28 days away, possibly more, depending on the day the equinox falls.

The last Easter that can occur is April 25. The earliest Easter that can occur is March 22, which was Easter in 1818 and will be again in 2285.

A Note On The Date Of Easter

Several governments and churches tried to suggest a fixed date for the feast, the second Sunday in April, but the idea did not really catch on.

For all you mathematicians out there, the dates of Easter repeat exactly every 5,700,000 years. Because the date varies so much, so does the weather. I remember Easters with highs near 90 degrees and some Easters with a few flakes flying.

Easter is a “movable holiday” so it does not fall on the same day from year to year. However, it is always observed on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25.

This year’s Easter falls just one day after the April full moon (Saturday, April 16), which is the first full moon to appear after the ecclesiastical vernal equinox (March 21), and is therefore known in the Christian calendar as ” paschal full moon “To make a long story short, Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon, which is why Easter is so late this year. Easter Trivia Questions & Answers

Many Eastern Orthodox churches follow the Julian rather than the Gregorian calendar. In this case, the celebration of Easter can take place between April 4 and May 8.

Specifically, Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon that occurs on or immediately after the vernal equinox (March 21). Yes, it’s a bit confusing at first read!

Let’s break it down: the vernal equinox (in other words, the date observed by the Christian Church) has a fixed date of March 21. The first full moon after March 21st rises on Saturday, April 16th this year. Therefore, Easter will be celebrated on the following Sunday, which is Sunday, April 17, 2022.

Note that the date of the equinox used by the Christian Church (the “ecclesiastical” date) is different from the astronomical date of the equinox, which can change from year to year. In 2022, the astronomical date of the equinox was Sunday, March 20.

How Do They Determine What Date Easter Will Occur On?

In Christian calendars, the first full moon of spring is called the “paschal full moon” (which we’ll explain below). So, in other words: Easter is celebrated on the Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon.

Generally, if the full moon occurs on the same day as the vernal equinox, Easter is celebrated on the following Sunday. However, it is recognized that:

Long ago, the Christian Church decided to simplify the process of calculating the date of Easter by always observing the vernal equinox on March 21, despite the fact that the date of the equinox changes over time and actually becomes earlier.

How Is Easter Determined

The date of the equinox can sometimes cause confusion, as in 2019, when the full moon and the astronomical equinox occurred on the same day – Wednesday, March 20.

Easter Dates: Past And Future Years

According to the formula above, this would have meant that Easter would have occurred on Sunday, March 24. However, since the Church observes the equinox on March 21, the full moon does not technically occur “on or immediately after” the equinox, meaning that the Next
