Physician Assistant Shadowing Opportunities – Most aspiring PAs will receive at least a few bounces (or sometimes no response at all) before they get their first traceability.
While aspiring PAs often have a hard time finding someone willing or able to follow them, there may be PAs who:
Physician Assistant Shadowing Opportunities
Over the years I have followed dozens of future PAs. I have made most of my career as a PA student. I am involved in helping the next generation of PA. Even so, I decline the shadowing request from time to time, and not always as I have a reasonable justification for the job.
How To Make Connections Now For Future Shadowing Opportunities|be A Physician Assistant
While PA understand that prospective PA students are looking for a shadow to add experience to their application or possibly get a letter of recommendation, we don’t want to feel used up in the process.
If it looks like I received a copy-and-paste email that doesn’t even include my name (which I assume was left out to generate more messages in less time), I’ll ignore that. In fact, my innate need to feel that the task has been accomplished means that I am more likely to politely decline. But the result will be the same.
First, PAs need to communicate a lot with patients, caregivers, and their team. A big part of PA work is basically simple communication.
If you are asking assistants for their time, attention and energy through the shadow, demonstrate your communication skills as well
Six Reasons You Need To Shadow A Pa Inside Pa Training
This opportunity can show that you have the building blocks for a good PA. This is the kind of person I want to hang out with.
Second, I have a tendency to turn down misplaced requests because they feel like a burden – as if someone is asking for more than usual effort required to follow a student, and other PAs will feel the same way.
To their recipients, generic-sounding emails are those that can be sent to any PA – in spirit
Most PAs want to help. However, they likely won’t feel compelled to support you (and maybe even respond) if they feel they will be asked to do so.
Virtual Pa Shadowing
There’s no getting around the fact that a shadow request is essentially a request for a favor. However, it is possible to create a requirement that will make the prospect of becoming an observer less difficult, increasing your chances of making a connection.
Here’s what to include in shader request emails if you want to increase the response rate and get more shading capabilities.
In order not to waste the time PAs ask for, some aspiring PAs go straight to the point with their shadow request:
“Hi, I’m interested in becoming a PA Assistant and was wondering if I could give you a shadow. My schedule is flexible and I can come whenever you are free. Thank you”.

While the intention to save someone’s time is admirable, the few moments you can save an PA with this kind of short message are probably not worth it.
Without giving more details in advance, you place responsibility for follow-up questions on the PA, which may increase the likelihood of a late response or ignored.
The goal is as easy as possible for the PA to say “yes”. And when you reduce the cognitive load of your request, you lower the barrier for a positive response.
You can make the decision-making process easier by introducing a few more details. And by showing assistants that you have good instincts about what they may want to know about you, you will demonstrate that you will be easy to handle while working.
Fundamentals About Shadowing A Physician I Did Not Learn From My College
So when you introduce yourself, share some context, explain where you are on your journey (including something about the work you have done so far) and describe what you are looking for.
“My name is Morgan and I worked in the advertising industry for 8 years before I came across the PA profession last fall. I have had the pleasure of gaining experience in patient care as a clinical research coordinator for six months now, I plan to apply to PA school next year and am very interested to learn more about how PA practice in a hospital setting.
“I am a sophomore in biology and recently learned about a PA career. I have spent the last few months observing PA in dermatology and family practice and am interested in learning more about how PA practice in other specialties.”
This is not “too much” information – an email with this level of detail is only read 10 seconds longer than a message without it. But with this little data, the PA will be able to understand if it would cover the “basics of PA” or go a little deeper if you are someone who has had more exposure to PA.

Don’t worry about what someone might think about where you are on your journey prior to PA – that’s not the point.
The idea is to reduce the brain power needed for someone to consider your request so that they are more likely to respond.
After introducing yourself, you can start showing that you really are interested in tracking (and not just bulk emailing to dozens of PAs in the three-state area (even if you are)) explaining why you are asking
To do this, you can specify how you found them if you use targeted shadow search, as I recommend. If you can appeal to find them through the PA association in your state of which you are also a member, or through your alma mater’s alumni network, you will show a shared interest and increase your chances of a response.
Medical Internships Abroad
No matter how you found the PA, you can always include something about their work in the inquiry.
“My experience was primarily in surgery and I would like to learn more about how PA works in the medical subspecialty. I’d love to see how you use your PA training to support endocrine patients. ”
“I’m interested in how your PA career is developing and would appreciate the opportunity to watch an PA with your level of experience in action.”
(For PAs who have been practicing for some time, which can be found in their graduation year or state licensing sites.)
Medical Shadowing (key Info + How To For Pre Meds)
“I worked as a research assistant in college and I really enjoyed it. I saw you writing journal articles and participated in clinical trials. I am interested in how you integrated these aspects into your clinical career and I would appreciate the opportunity. ” to outshine you. “
There are two rules here: be honest and don’t be stupid. Don’t say you want to work in surgery as a PA if you don’t want to – just make it clear that you’ve worked in an outpatient practice and want to see how PA works in a different setting. (Or what is true for you.)
And don’t repeat the entire work history and career details of someone else’s career and make them wonder if you are looking at that person – right now – through their office window. A link to a snippet of their experience is enough to let them know you are taking the time to create a thoughtful, personalized email.
After introducing yourself and customizing your request, the next step in creating an effective background inquiry email is to lower the answer bar.
Shadowing And Healthcare Experience
To do this, start by removing any “conditions” from your request. While you may have to squeeze yourself into the shadows for the next two months to meet the program’s requirements, the anxiety you may be feeling should remain your own and not be forced upon someone from whom you are asking for a favor.
Time may not work, but leave it for a future replacement. The more immediate goal is to get an answer. If time is not working, you can use your new skills of writing shading requests on the next PA.
Additionally, you’ll want to give your potential prospective mentor more options than full accommodation or complete disappointment. If the PA feels they can only help when everything is okay, they are less likely to hear a response.
However, if you provide them with various means of help and facilitation, they will be more likely to offer what they can.
Seek Shadowing Opportunities
“I would be very grateful for any opportunity to follow you and learn more about your role or any advice you would like to share about a PA career or PA school planning.”
With this attitude, you give someone a chance to help, even if they can’t overshadow you. While you continue to ask for their input, being grateful for less than what you asked for makes the message seem less selfish. As a result, they are more likely to respond.
And even if someone doesn’t have a chance to shadow you in the coming weeks, their response may be an opportunity for you to get great advice, connect with the shadow in the future, or find a mentor.
If you’ve been shadow hunting for a while, you’ve probably already done so
