Program Manager Career Path

Program Manager Career Path – One of the complaints I often heard in my previous company was that there was no room for growth. The growth path for humans is unclear at best. Where do you go when you have become l10n project manager, program manager and operations manager. After working with dozens of clients and translating hundreds of thousands of words, it’s getting a little outdated. So what is the growth path for someone in ?

On the provider side, the organization of the company is usually quite similar among different companies. There is a clear hierarchy of roles. Most start as project managers (or in some companies there is a project coordinator role that comes under the project manager). After a few years, project managers can be promoted to program managers, managing entire client programs rather than individual projects. Some Program Managers may be promoted to Customer Success Manager whose purpose is to manage customer relationships. Finally, there is the operations manager who oversees the entire process. In this group there are also resource managers, engineers, QA specialists and linguists. Sometimes these people are in-house and sometimes they are outsourced.

For a company, the path to growth often involves moving up the pyramid. In most cases, Customer Success Managers manage program managers, and program managers manage project managers. Daily varies based on different customers. In some large companies, there will be different divisions for different work areas. For example, you might have a department that specializes in software and another team that focuses on transcreation. In large companies, you may have some horizontal mobility across divisions. This allows you to work on different types of projects, all of which present different challenges.

Types Of Organizational Structures In Project Management

For many people in Denmark, growth will include moving jobs or companies. This often involves moving from the supplier side to the client side or vice versa. Personally, I made the leap from the supplier side to the customer side a few years ago. I have exhausted almost every role in the agency I have worked for for 10 years. I’ve done everything and I’m ready for a new challenge. For me, that meant trying my hand at client-side management.

Working on the client side provides a whole new set of challenges and growth opportunities. Companies usually reach a certain size when they begin to consider expanding into international markets. If you enter early in the process, you may have the ability to shape international strategy from scratch. You can create a strong framework and choose your team. There are unlimited growth opportunities and new areas to explore. Because almost every part of the business is affected, from product to marketing to support, you can gain experience in all these areas. There are also many logistics areas. For example, after , you may have the opportunity to work by opening a local outpost for your company. It is a new challenge that goes beyond linguistics.

If you join a more mature team on the client side, the growth path can be similar to that of an agency. Companies that are more mature in their journey often set up an in-house translation agency to manage large volumes. The team is responsible for managing suppliers, handling day-to-day translation requests and needs, and maintaining consistent quality. In these types of companies, the growth path will look like the pyramid above.

Although the growth path in other careers may not be clear, there is a path. It is frustrating at times and feels like there is nowhere to go. At times you will feel like you can’t spend another minute pushing files. I think we need to think beyond language when we speak. I love words and language, but I realize that language is not the only part of the equation. A career in is not just about source and target languages; it’s about international strategy. If we can get there, the possibilities are endless. There is a path to build and it becomes more interesting and challenging. It allows you to think globally and have a real business impact.
