Harry Langstaff and Amy Briffa spotted the green plant in their local hardware store and realized it was actually an extremely rare plant that had been reduced from £24 to £12.

The couple believe the plant was discounted because B&Q staff mistakenly believed the yellowing leaves meant the plant was sick – but it was actually the extremely rare monstera Aurea marmorata.

“It was reduced to £12 because it had a yellow leaf which B&Q must have assumed was diseased.
“It’s like winning the lottery for people who collect potted plants, so you can imagine how we felt then.
“We quickly checked the trunk for any color and immediately picked him up and secured him in the back seat with a seat belt as if he was our child.”

Last month it emerged that Lidl and B&Q were unknowingly flogging £2,000 worth of rare plants for just £4 when their rarities were mistaken for disease.
And the couple were scouring the shops themselves for rare plants for their small business, The Plant Couple, when they made the discovery last December.
Harry now estimates that their plant is worth around £600 at the moment – but in the meantime they want to sell the leaves for £170 each.
He says to check if the plant is rare or has only one yellow dry leaf, check the stem to see if the white or yellow color is coming from the stem of the plant.

Even then, you need to wait for leaves to grow with similar patterns to confirm that it is not just a disease.
Rare species with lighter leaves are also often at a disadvantage for survival, as the whiter color means they are less able to receive as much light.
“The first thing we tend to do is transplant them into richer, well-drained soil and really give it enough moisture and light to thrive and hope for the best,” says Harry.
“We didn’t realize it was so rare until it produced another leaf a few weeks later, it kept getting better and better and we just couldn’t believe it.

To get a £2,000 plant, the couple explain, it has to be a fully developed plant with elaborate brightly colored leaves.
“And the odds of finding this in a plant like this are extremely small, one in a million.
“However, if the stem shows signs of banding, it is variegated (showing different colors), which will greatly increase its value.
So if you’re perusing B&Q and hoping for luck, make sure there isn’t a yellow or white streak on the stem, as Harry says, wholesalers often mistake the true variety for dying leaves and flogged gems for next to nothing.
