Lynda Carter rose to fame after playing the role of Wonder Woman in the 1970s TV series. But it wasn’t long before she decided that Hollywood just wasn’t for her. In an interview with People magazine, Carter explained why she decided to leave everything behind.

“I already had a lot of work and I didn’t have a lot in my life,” she said. “I spent a lot of time on film sets – and that’s saying in a way today that I’m grateful for that – but I didn’t have much content in my life.”

She met her husband, Washington lawyer Robert Altman, in 1984, got married and moved to his part of the country. They built their own dream home in Maryland and welcomed two children, James and Jessica. She said she found the fulfillment she was always looking for through her family.
Both of her children are now lawyers, just like their father, and Carter wouldn’t have it any other way. “I think intellectual pursuits in our family were much more central to our lives,” she said. “It was never things, bags or gifts; it’s achievements and a sense of accomplishment in our lives.”
“I found this to be the man. It’s always the people in your life — the friends and family you choose to spend time with,” she said. “Every step you take is a more difficult step in caring for your children. The easy way out is often the hardest.”
But Carter isn’t just retiring these days. She is working on her third album and plays the president on the CW show

The “we” she spoke of was nothing less than a woman. The rise of the #MeToo movement, along with the resurrection of Wonder Woman as a blockbuster movie, prompted Ms. Carter to reassess some of her own experiences in the entertainment business. She has been married to Robert A. Altman since 1984 and recently told him for the first time that she was sexually assaulted early in her career. She said she does not want to publicly name the perpetrator, in part because she has consulted with an attorney, who told her there is no defense at this time.
“Most of all,” she said, “I don’t want to do it for myself. It’s about “What can I say that can help other women?”
With an eclectic mix of tracks like Duffy’s 2008 pop-soul hit “Mercy” and a slowed-down reinterpretation of the Motown classic “Stop! In the Name of Love,” the album showcases Ms. Carter’s sweet yet powerful voice while also paying tribute to her family. She wrote a country love song for Mr. Altman, a former lawyer who is chairman and chief executive of video game company ZeniMax.

There’s also a ballad called “Change Just a Little” dedicated to their son James Altman, 30. Their daughter Jessica Altman, 27 (both children are also lawyers), accompanies Mrs. Carter on several Everly Brothers songs. The Kennedy Center performed the women’s anthem “Somethin’ Bad” recorded by Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert.

“When she asked me to be on the album, it was very clear,” said Ms. Altman, who sat on the floor sipping tea from a Wonder Woman mug during the rehearsal.
The couple’s sprawling Georgian mansion contains its fair share of Wonder Woman memorabilia, such as a pincushion on the couch in the living room, a headboard on the kitchen shelf and dozens of photos on the walls. “We were trying to keep up with our own history,” Ms. Carter said. “I have a lot of albums, but when the photos are in books, it’s harder to get to them.”

With Diana Prince still portraying Mrs. Carter in Wonder Woman, many fans don’t know that she was a singer long before she auditioned for the acting role. At 14, she quit waiting at her uncle’s restaurant in Winslow, Arizona, when she realized she could make $50 a night singing in a band. Although she was a good student and qualified for an academic scholarship to study at Arizona State University, she couldn’t resist the lure of travel. So she left home and promised her father that she would send him every next paycheck to save.
“My husband once asked my mom, ‘Why on earth would you let your 17-year-old daughter go on tour with a bunch of musicians?'” Mrs. Carter recalled. “My mom said, ‘I’m sorry, have you ever tried to talk Linda out of anything she decided to do?’
While touring with various bands, Ms. Carter learned music theory from jazz musicians and performed in Las Vegas lounges, New York’s borscht hotels, Southern honky-tonks and nightclubs across the country. She remembers being somewhere in the Midwest, between shows, when she saw the 30-year-old singer on stage and had an epiphany.

“The next day I woke up and couldn’t stop crying,” Ms Carter said. “I thought: This is me in 10 years.”
Ms. Carter signed with a local modeling agency – she was 5-foot-9, with long dark hair and stunning blue eyes – and within a month was crowned Miss Phoenix, Miss Arizona and then Miss World USA. She pointed to a framed photo of her wearing a crown, train and minidress, getting off a plane in the early 1970s. She noted that although her mother is proud, she finds the whole beauty queen thing ridiculous.
“You have to imagine the time. Women’s Lib! Burn the bra! Gloria Steinem!” she said. “And a guy told me I needed an escort and I had to go cut the ribbon somewhere. It was not me.
She returned to music, recording a few singles in England with EMI before moving to Los Angeles, where she took acting lessons with renowned coach Charles Conrad. There she meets a young up-and-coming actor named Les Moonves, who becomes her stage partner and close friend. ”He was so sweet,” Ms. Carter said of Mr. Moonves, now the chairman and chief executive of CBS.
