For many families, fall means holiday dinners and watching football games on the weekends. Football-loving families will love this true story. The film shows how the Tuohy family brought Michael Oher’s Baltimore Ravens offensive into their home and family when he was in high school with no roof over his head or family to support him. One of my favorite scenes shows the family filling their plates with Thanksgiving takeout and Michael Oher sitting in the dining room alone eating the special meal while the rest of the family stands in front of the TV watching football. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gw-G-TGHoCM

The opening scene for Miracle on 34th Street, commonly referred to as the Christmas movie, is Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Six-year-old Susan has serious doubts about Santa. But after meeting Santa at a special department store who convinces him he’s real, Susan receives the most precious gift of all – the importance of childlike miracles, trust, and standing up for what you believe in.

In this Thanksgiving tale, the Mayflower is caught in a violent storm. William, the church mouse, tells the story from his point of view. He started with the Pilgrim’s decision to move to America and the packing of the Mayflower. When a disaster at sea threatens to sink the ship, William has an idea to save the ship. The pilgrims landed safely and wrote the Mayflower Treaty. They were building their new colony and church, but now it was fall and they were running out of food. Winters are harsh and food is limited, so many pilgrims don’t live to see winter. Pilgrims learn to plant crops in the spring, and in the fall celebrate a great feast, the first Thanksgiving.

Based on the book by Louisa May Alcott (also author of Little Women), Old Fashioned Thanksgiving is set in New Hampshire shortly after the Civil War. A young widowed mother raises three children after their father died in the war. Their situation seems very deplorable, but because the children want their mother to have a great Thanksgiving holiday, they enlist the help of their wealthy grandmother to help make their wish come true (unbeknownst to their mother).

Although Pocahontas is highly inaccurate historically, this Disney animated film focuses on chief daughter Algonquin Powhatan, who is unhappy about her impending matchmaking with Kokum. British settlers arrived in the area and Pocahontas fell in love with John Smith. Meanwhile, the greedy Governor Ratcliffe believes that the Native Americans have access to the wealth of gold and intends to seize the treasure. Pocahontas and John Smith secretly meet, and when they are discovered, it creates dangerous tensions between the Europeans and the Algonquins. The only hope of preventing war lies with Smith and Pocahontas.

Hallmark Holiday Collection Movie Pack 4 (Trading Christmas, Lucky Christmas, Case For Christmas, National Tree) (Hallmark) This collection includes the film National Tree, set in Thanksgiving. Everyone is focused on Christmas. But I have to admit that I have a soft spot for Hallmark films…especially the holiday ones!

Some of them may be suitable for your older teen as well. As always, it’s up to the parents… to decide what they’ll be watching under your roof!

Planes, Trains and Cars **note that this film is rated R mainly because of ONE scene where Steve Martin’s character is so frustrated that he uses a certain swear word about 20 times in less than 2 minutes. From what I’ve read, that’s why it gets an R rating.

Grumpy old people. I really like this show (and its sequels) and for some reason my older teens haven’t seen it.

Paul Blart: Mall Police. In general, it is not offensive. However, I would recommend watching the movie first before watching with young children.
