Kelsea Ballerini’s ‘authentic’ Social Media Guide
It was released on March 20, 2020, when the world began to feel the terrible onset of the pandemic, which slowed down the release of the project. While the album did well, it debuted at #2 and #12 on Top Country Albums
200 charts, respectively, and spawned four official singles such as “Hole in the Bottle” and “Half of My Hometown”, Ballerini was open about her disappointment at the time of release.
During the pandemic of 2020 and 2021, Ballerini did what many creative people do: took some time for himself, reflected on his life and wrote songs. He emerged with 15 new songs and a sharp creative approach for his fourth studio album,
Ballerini and her label Black River introduced the project with today’s hit country radio single “Heartfirst,” a sultry track that fuses ’90s country with Ballerini’s signature country-pop writing.
Kelsea Ballerini Announces New Version Of ‘hole In The Bottle’ With Shania Twain
The album’s sound mirrors that of “Heartfirst” with a few ’90s references, though Ballerini says that wasn’t intentional.
“Faith Hill, Trisha Yearwood and Shania Twain are the obvious references for this album, but there was also Sixpence None The Richer and Sheryl Crow,” says Ballerini.
. “But I didn’t necessarily set out to make a ’90s-sounding album, it’s a natural influence of what I was listening to.”
Determined to create a cohesive project with a clear line, Ballerini brought in producers Shane McAnally and Julian Bunetta. Jesse Frasure and Alysa Vanderheym are credited as producing the album, as well as their work on the album’s final track, “What I Have”.
Kelsea Ballerini On Why She’s Being Honest With Her Fans
“My last album was such a blanket. Each song had its own personality with respect to the composer and production team. Each song was its own moment. I am proud [no
Album] because it was the first time I gave myself the freedom and confidence to play. This time I wanted to go back and make a simple record,” says Ballerini. “I still wanted it to push boundaries, but I wanted it to feel like a cohesive story. It was very important to me to have a production that helped bring the vision to life and facilitate the whole project.
“Shane and Julian not only produced it, they oversaw the whole thing. They were able to give me outside perspectives on songs that weren’t written. They brought it to life in such a beautiful way that honors country music but also honors everything I do.”
While McAnally and Bunetta’s production is polished and interesting, it doesn’t get in the way
Kelsea Ballerini Reveals The Story Behind Her First Tattoo
For this album, Ballerini began writing with one of the guts of the album: a solo track called “Marilyn”, which centers on Ballerini’s newfound insight into the issues of the beautiful but tragic life of Marilyn Monroe. The singer and songwriter has made it a tradition to include a solo track on all of his albums. It was “The First Time” for his debut. Actually
“Responsibility requires me to be honest,” he reports about the practice. “Writing songs is my favorite part of what I do. I still love being in a room with people like Shane, Hillary Lindsey, or Nicolle Galyon who make me sharper as a writer. In one breath, I want to honor myself and believe that I will take the idea as a whole and not always rely on others. Doing solo writing on each album is my way of being responsible for it.”
“Love Is A Cowboy” was the first song I wrote with the intention of writing it for an album with other songwriters. It felt like a direction that honored the evolution of my songs and felt different sounding than anything I’d done before. That really caught my attention,” says Balleri.
The highlight of the 15-track project is “What I Have.” Co-written with Vanderhey and Cary Barlowe, the tune is very country and showcases Ballerini’s honeyed voice and sharp ability to deliver a message.

“I was on a writing retreat. Alyssa and Cary were doing harmonies for ‘The Little Things’ [another song] and I was looking out the window at the ocean. I only had a moment to think,” recalls Balleri. “One of the things that many people have learned over the last few years is to take stock of their lives. We are constantly changing and that is the theme of this album. I had just a moment to myself, taking stock of what my life was like at that moment and the simplest things that made me the happiest.
“I said, ‘Hey guys, can you stop the ‘Little Things?’ song we wrote,” Ballerini says. “It fell from the sky. The album is the original demo. We tried to re-record it and it didn’t capture the honesty and purity of the magic of how we wrote it.”
Give Ballerini growth and acceptance. Her “Doin’ My Best” has her dealing with things in life that are hard to deal with, like growing out of a boyfriend or being called out on social media. On “Walk In The Park” he sings about being complicated. In the title track, Ballerini makes a big point that she, like all of us, is “capable of changing at any time.”
“Every album I have has two bookmarks from the 1930s. That is between the ages of 26 and 28. There was a lot of growth during those years, but it was also the first time I had been in my twenties,” Ballerini says, adding that he studied therapy. The coping mechanism is business.
Kelsea Ballerini & Halsey —
During the pandemic, Ballerini was able to sit with her feelings, work on herself and evaluate her relationships, which is clearly reflected in the maturity of the author’s work on the project.
“I started processing my life in a different way. This time allowed me to really dig deeper and have more time to work on myself, my friendships and relationships. Also my songwriting and writing in general. I have to write a book. All those things really helped me grow faster.”
During her time in the public eye, Ballerini has managed to be quite vulnerable with her fans as her audience grows, keeping parts of herself close and protected.
“It’s a dance. Now I’m in a period of my life where I’m rediscovering it,” he admits. “I feel a responsibility to show the bright parts of my life and ‘work’. It would be very easy, but it is not realistic. I feel responsible as a person that some people see
