Even before May is on the calendar, I tell myself to prepare. For a year I didn’t know it was coming and took my vacation secretly. It wasn’t a good weekend.

Find someone to talk to about it. A therapist, a trusted friend, your spouse, a grief support group. Someone. Talking about how bad this “holiday” is can help alleviate some of the discomfort. For me, it’s better to say out loud how bad it is that I don’t have a mother anymore.

Sometimes on Mother’s Day I get angry, sometimes I get sad, and sometimes I get annoyed at the silly cheers. Don’t worry about it coming out. Scream, cry, complain about your friend who also lost his parents. People can tell you have mixed feelings about the day, even if they can’t quite understand what it means for you.
Call your grandmother, your aunt, call your mother’s best friend, who is always watching over you. Go to dinner with your parents and see how they are doing. Tell your best friend who just had a baby what a great mom she really is. Tell your mom that you appreciate everything she does for your family (even if it’s hard to recognize that day).
Search through your old photo albums or digital archives. Remember all the good times you had with your mom. Imagine celebrating birthdays, family dinners, game and movie nights, Halloween, Thanksgiving, making holiday cookies. Remember the good times and don’t be afraid to smile and laugh about them.
