Five years after the Civil War, Birmingham, Alabama, was founded. With his birth in 1871 came the need for tons of pig iron to build the crumbling infrastructure of the United States, so Colonel James Withers Sloss began to build the Sloss Furnaces. A year later, the company opened its doors to hundreds of employees, according to its official website. The work of the blast furnace was high but also dangerous, and many workers began to fall to their deaths in the furnace.
In the early 1900s, things got worse with the evil pioneer, James “Slag” Wormwood, who took a terrible risk to increase production, respectively.
During his tenure at Sloss, approximately 50 workers died on site, and many more were involved in horrific accidents. He claimed that his workers had thrown him into the oven in 1906 as revenge.
