The Community College Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program exists to meet the growing need in southwestern Fairfield County for highly qualified entry-level PTAs. Career Path For Physical Therapy Assistants
Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) provide physical therapy services under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist. PTAs help people of all ages with medical problems or other health-related conditions that limit their ability to move and perform functional activities of daily living. Assistance from a PTA may include teaching patients/clients exercises to increase mobility, strength and coordination, teaching activities such as walking with crutches, canes or walkers, massage, and the use of physical and electrical therapies such as ultrasound and electrical stimulation .

PTAs are not graded and there are certain skills that are considered “PT only”. PTAs operate under the direction and supervision of PTs.
Associate-level PTA courses do not usually transfer to a graduate PT program, but general education courses such as math and English count toward the undergraduate degree required for admission to the PT program. PTAs attending PT school have the advantage of a broad background in physical therapy, as well as the ability to work a flexible schedule for a high salary while attending school. There are two programs in the country that are specifically designed for PTAs who want to become PTs. The 2 years required to complete the PTA program include all coursework and clinical education. This usually amounts to 5 semesters averaging 15 credits per semester – 74 to 75 credits in total. The majority of your time (approximately 75%) will be devoted to classroom learning (the didactic part) and the remainder (approximately 25%) to clinical “hands-on” learning.
