Dolly Parton Christmas Album – Saving today’s POP from a possible future lovelessness is Dolly Parton’s 10-song holiday album from 1990, Home for Christmas. It was released exactly 24 years from the date of this review. Does this album bring you holiday cheer, or should you lock the doors and pretend you’re not home? read…
This is Dolly’s second Christmas album – the last being the 1984 duet album with Kenny Rogers – Once Upon a Christmas, but unlike this one (that I’ve heard), this one contains no original songs. Each song is a popular Christmas number.

The album opens with the classic first noel – starting with Dolly reminiscing about her childhood. Then the congregation of the New Salm Methodist Church began to sing – a familiar sound, standing on the piano. This feels like a personal beauty and charm to the album. About 1:40 minutes studio recording took, and Dolly launched a perfect piano rendition.

Along for the ride, with real country music, Santa Claus is coming to town. Dolly sounds like she’s having fun with this song. Unfortunately, the line ‘Ah, he’ll go round’ (said during the violin solo) is a little too sweet, but otherwise, the song is good in the traditional way.
Next up is the delightfully jazzy I’ll Be Home For Christmas, and Dolly does light work on vocals here. She was backed by strings, piano, double bass and some male backing vocals. It’s a rich, balanced ride.
Dolly teaches a group of children about the next song – Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. It’s a nice soft, light version, with guitar, fiddle, dobro and a nice mandolin part. With some encouragement, the children join in the last third of the song.
Dolly takes a more country tone with the track Go Tell It On The Mountain – a song I remember from primary school. Luckily for her version, there’s a Bobby Jones & Nashville chorus, and the song picks up speed for a gospel-style ending.
Make It A Dolly Parton Christmas
Acoustic guitar and drums represent Little Drummer Boy. It’s a slow number, and Dolly is backed by Bobby Jones & the Nashville Band. I never liked the song – no matter who made it.
We’re Three Kings is up next, and the smooth sound of the hammered dulcimer makes this a joy to listen to, and soon joined by the mandolin. Dolly’s voice is perfect for this song. I think this is probably the best version of the song I’ve heard.
Sleigh bells and children enter the jingle show, and there’s a real sense of humor, and you can almost hear everyone smiling while singing the song. Dolly even manages to giggle during the chorus. It’s short and sweet, and that’s perfect.
The fiddle returns for a slow, perhaps slightly sad, country music version of O Little Town of Bethlehem. This version follows a pattern I have never heard before. The fiddle and mandolin fit the pattern perfectly, as does the country style.
Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton
The album closes with Joy To The World, which opens with guitar and piano. Dolly’s voice is supported by the congregation of the New Salem Methodist Church, and is joined by the Pentecostal Christian Church, which all provide a loud and deep voice. The album closes as it opens, with the New Salem Methodist Church congregation singing along with the piano, and Dolly delivering a Christmas message of love.
This sounds like a short album, but it’s just a sweet, sweet, Christmas album, and Dolly makes it the perfect Christmas gift. And if that wasn’t enough, Dolly released it (like her last Christmas album with the late Kenny Rogers), with a TV special, which is worth watching (see above).
Based on all the Dolly Parton albums we have reviewed so far, we can rate her average album score as 4.5 out of 5.
