“I’ve had my own label for years,” Parton said in an interview with Music Week. “It is entirely possible that I may sell the catalog I have for business, estate planning and family reasons. I have often thought about it and I am sure I could make a lot of money doing it.”

Given the enduring popularity of the 74-year-old singer’s songs — her 1992 cover of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” was a global phenomenon — the sale of the publishing rights could trigger a bidding war.

Earlier this week, Bob Dylan sold the publishing rights to his 600-song catalog, which includes “Rolling Stone” and “Browin’ in the Wind,” to Universal Music for more than $300 million.

Still, Parton said she’s unwilling to give up full control over her songs, regardless of the size of her payday.

“Regardless of who I sell to and credit for the songs, I’ll still have some control,” he said. “As a songwriter, I never cared about money. I made money, but I always wanted my name on my songs.” Country star and gay icon Dolly Parton responded in Dolly style to the latest cover of rapper Lil Nas X’s 1974 hit “Jolene.”

Lil Nas X, who recently released his debut album Montero, was stunned in his response Wednesday night: “HOLY S—,” he wrote.

Parton shared her reveal of the cover on all of her social media accounts, including Facebook and Instagram, where she included a photo of her and Lil Nas X both wearing lashes.

Lil Nas X came out as gay in 2019 and celebrated his queerness in his music and videos.

Parton has also long been considered a gay icon for her support of LGBTQ rights in her industry. Although it is not known for certain that he supports same-sex marriage, he made statements in support of it as early as 2009.

In a 2014 interview with Billboard magazine, Parton also said she doesn’t think LGBTQ people should be judged for who they are.

“They know that I absolutely love and accept them, just like any other person,” he told Billboard when asked about his large gay following. “I’ve struggled enough in my life to be appreciated and understood. I’ve had to go up against all kinds of people over the years to be myself.”

She added: “I think everyone should be allowed to be who they are and love who they love. I don’t think we should judge. Lord, I’ve got enough trouble judging somebody else.”
