Help I Want To Change My Career – The key to change is getting out of your head. To stop thinking and start doing. But where and how do you start? This is one of the first questions I ask my clients, first of all it is important that you understand who you really are. What tasks at work do you like? And which ones would you most like to drive if you could? When you’ve started on the wrong career path to begin with, it can be difficult to discover some of the answers. You have grown into the role you are in now and may have lost yourself along the way.
A great tool to help you understand yourself a little better is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test. I could write a book about how great this test is, but to keep it short; It gives you detailed information about your natural strengths and weaknesses, how you see the world, how you process new information, and it shows you what careers suit your personality type. And the good news is that you can take the test for free here:

Once you know what your natural talents are and who you are as a person, you can start exploring. Write down the industries or job roles that interest you and see how you can take action on them. Do you know someone who works in one of these industries? Reconnect and chat. Ask them what their day is like, or spend a day at work with them if possible. You will be surprised how many people are willing to help you. Also check the current vacancies for your listed job roles. Do you need new qualifications or certificates? Or do you need a portfolio? How much does it cost and how long will it take? Again, talk to people. Can you find anyone who has taken the same course and how was their experience? Are there monthly payment options? And what are the chances of finding a position in the industry?
How Do I Change My Search Criteria?
If you are not sure what jobs interest you, you can take a look at tasks and activities you like to do. Does this work with your hands? Do you work outdoors? In a team or alone? Something creative or working with numbers? If you like to be creative, just start creating! A thought that stays in the head can easily be romanticized. When you’ve finally started that dream business or landed that dream job, you may realize that you really miss working with colleagues, or it turns out not to be as creative as you thought it would be. Always try things out before making any firm decisions. Pick up old hobbies or create new ones. Only through this, you will find out what lights you up. “Are those your kids? They’re really cute,” a colleague told me. He looked at a picture on my desk of my 3 month old son on my 3 year old daughter’s lap. Suddenly I felt caught in a lie as if I had the stock photo that came with the frame displayed.
There were my children in the frame, but that was all they were. I realized at that moment that I didn’t really know them, but I felt that I was using them as a kind of trophy to be shown to others.
I had children who were raised by others. Yes, they lived with me, but when I counted up the hours they spent in daycare (around 10 hours a day) and how much time I actually spent with them (around 2 hours a day on weekdays and another 12 hours a day on weekends ). I realized that they were not really mine.
Now I’m sure you’re thinking that I walked into the boss’s office and made a mess. Absolutely not! Although I wanted more time with my children, I also wanted a purpose outside of my family, and working always provided that for me.

It actually took me 2 years to get the courage to leave the corporate world to start my own career and life coaching practice and another 18 months to actually earn any real income from it, but that’s not why you’re reading this.
I knew that something had to change if I wanted to get to know my children. I knew there was an answer that wasn’t black and white (staying at home vs. working). It could be a mix and I would find it.
You may not be struggling with this exact dilemma. Your problem is changing companies, industries or even an entire career path. This is for you. They are not worried.
Who actually dictated this? Oh, factories back in the industrial revolution. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never worked in a factory, why should I work during factory hours? Because everyone does. Yes, this is literally the logic we go through even as study after study finds that the average worker has about 4 hours of quality work time in them.

Is it really necessary for you to sit at a desk for 40 hours, or can you do the same work you do now in less time? My answer to you is, yes, you can do your entire work in 20 hours. Especially the higher you go in the organization. It’s the dirty little secret that no one tells you about management, because you don’t really do the work you don’t really need to put in 40 hours.
I have created some of the best presentations and documents sitting cross-legged in my bed. I’ve also created some great emails while sitting on the toilet (no kidding, you’ve done it too). My point is, why do we have to sit in a certain building to do our work? This made sense before the invention of personal computers and the Internet. You literally couldn’t work unless you were in a certain building where all the tools were. Except now the tools are in your pocket. But for some reason, being in a building is still something we stick to.
Don’t get me wrong, meeting face-to-face with colleagues to formulate ideas, move project plans and even have annual reviews is important. But do these meetings happen daily? Be honest, you know that the majority of meetings you go to are all on your phone or laptop without paying attention to them. About two-thirds of all meetings can be an email. If you don’t agree, please share with me! I hear.
Mental health is at a low level worldwide, but especially in the United States. It’s no wonder we place more value on our jobs than time spent with our families.
I Want To Change My Career But Don’t Know Where To Start
As much as I love a good trip to an amusement park with my kids, these aren’t the moments they remember the most. When I recently asked my own children for their favorite memory of us together, they shared seemingly common ones. My son said he loves helping me make meatballs because he’s better at rolling them than I am. My daughter said she loves it when I play with her hair right before she falls asleep and we talk about things that happened in our days.
A friend recently reminded me of an article we both read years ago about how many Sabbaths you get with your children. Do you know how many? 936. She is now a junior in high school and is down to 150. In your 30 year career you get about 6,240 days.
And it is not only the Sabbath, but the moments when you are children who encounter something difficult. It is our place to show them how to deal with these emotions and make sound, rational decisions. Work leaves room for stumbles, parents, not so much.
Who or what do you prioritize in your life and is what you want to prioritize. This is an important step because it helps you clearly put everything else into perspective.

I don’t think so, now get out of your safe job and into the unknown, where you are not making money. I mean actually, let go of the security of your job for just a second and allow yourself to dream again. Remember it? You did a lot of that in high school and maybe college too. You meant to change things, make a difference. But then you got a job that makes more money than you thought you would ever make, and you chose the security of the paycheck over your original dreams.
I did that in the beginning too. Then I decided to build an escape plan to find what I loved in my life and put it in my work. I built a plan and worked on it for 2 years before leaving the security of the job that offered good pay and benefits. I now get that position by a long shot and teach others how to do their thing on a daily basis.
