We live on Weller Avenue, right in the heart of Rowntree. The Halloween parade passes by our house. We moved here six years ago, right before Halloween. Of course I knew about Rowntree and I knew about Halloween. In my mid-20s, I bought a small house on Kentwood Avenue, just outside the Rowntree neighborhood, as close as possible at the time. When Marshall and I got married, she moved there, but she wasn’t old enough to start a family. When I moved to Weller six years ago, I was pregnant with Walker.
Let me tell you – you can learn about Halloween at Rowntree, but experiencing it is completely different. Luckily, I have some co-workers and friends who live in Weller who told me how much candy we should buy and what to do. We start buying candy a month in advance because we need at least 1,500 – that’s at least the first hour, hour and a half to give the child a piece of candy.
I think that’s what I love about it, it surprises me every year, it’s what you might call old-fashioned America in a lot of ways. No matter what day of the week Halloween falls on, the neighborhood really starts taking out the Halloween decorations, and suddenly everyone shows up with lawn chairs and fire pits in yards and driveways.
We actually play with our little ones right before the parade starts, around 4:30 or 5 in the afternoon, because after that it’s so crowded that we see our neighbors and only go one way. the children of our neighbors. I think it’s great that this neighborhood has embraced it. To be honest, Halloween isn’t my favorite holiday, but when we bought a house in Weller, we knew we weren’t going to be Scrooge without the lights on or the participation. You can’t help but love it.
