When Calls The Heart Book Series – When the heart calls. What comes to mind when you hear this title? A book series you grew up with? Or maybe a TV show you constantly tweet about? Or something you heard from your friends but never checked out. Maybe you checked it out and then got overwhelmed by all the information that came out.
I give two points to anyone who says they know this series from this blog. What? 😉
When Calls The Heart Book Series
First, you have two different book series: The Canadian West (Jeanette Oke) and Back to the Canadian West (Janette Oke and Laurel Oke Logan). The first series began in 1983 and ended three years later with a total of four books…much to the chagrin of fans. Finally, Jeanette Oke wrote two more books in 1990 and 2001 following Elizabeth’s (and her husband’s) children (the now grown children are the main characters, not their parents.) . “Back to the Canadian West” came on as the telecast began; The books in this series are a special companion to the Hallmark show.

Here’s one thing: don’t get confused with the movie or TV series of the same name! The book (this book) is told in Elizabeth Thatcher’s POV. First Elizabeth Thatcher. In Call of the Heart, you follow the journey of Aunt Elizabeth as her granddaughter Elizabeth (or Beth) reads her diary. (Granddaughter Elizabeth, whom I call Beth, is the main character in the second series of books and the TV series). Confused? Well, you can. 🙂
What is aunt/brother-in-law and niece/brother-in-law? It’s just that: In Where Courage Calls, Beth Thatcher says of her Misty Elizabeth: “She [Beth] now remembers again how much fun it was to follow in her aunt’s footsteps and travel West. Her name was not really her aunt Elizabeth.” that—as the older daughter of her father’s older brother, Ephraim, and her older cousin, whom her mother insisted on addressing with respect, Beth and her sisters decided to continue the mandate of love.” ~ Page 35, “Courage Calls” by Jeanette Oke and Laurel Oke Logan on the ground”.
So, I’ve talked about the Books and the Movie, and now it’s time to talk about the TV show. (Comparing TV shows to books and movies is a very different story, but I’ll get into that in a moment.) If I could go back and live in any time in history, it would be 1908 in New York. Why? and why am i saying this? Clothes! Oh, the clothes! Hats, hair, shoes! *note* I love the first season for the amazing clothes I *get* to wear. Season one and season two differ significantly:
Now let’s play the Red Light, Green Light game. How it works: I write part of the plot of the book, “Where Courage Calls” (a TV companion story) and compare it to the Movie and the TV show. Green means “Yes, there.” Red “No, not here!” means. Example:
When Calls The Heart Season 9 Spoilers: Elizabeth’s Book Is Published
~Edward Beth/Elizabeth’s potential love interest…(Movie, TV Show) Edward appears in the movie but is not mentioned at all in the TV show. Does this have any meaning? This is basically to understand that Book, Movie and TV Show have different details. 🙂
~ Beth has two sisters, Margaret (married to John, with one son) and Julie… (Movie = No sisters mentioned (but we assume it’s Margaret, married to John, with one son) and Julie, TV Show = Elizabeth’s sisters Viola (married not) and Julie (Julie the TV show is almost identical to Julie the book. ))
~Beth lost her younger brother to whooping cough and suffered even more, he was weak and sick (The movie and TV show mentions William’s or little Beth’s illnesses).
~Back to Canadian West series set in the 1920s… (Movie=set in 1910, TV show=set in 1910-1911).
When Calls The Heart Double Feature: Heart Of A Mountie/ Disputing Hearts (dvd)
~Beth likes music and plays the violin… (The movie and TV show mention this fact or play Elizabeth/Beth, which she does many times in “The Return”.)
~ Contrary to movies and TV shows, young Elizabeth Thatcher was not caught en route to Coal Valley in the WCC. The train station compass his father had given him was stolen, but not stolen. (The compass is in the movie, but not the TV show.)
~ Jack (Beth calls him by his full name, Jarrick) has a handlebar mustache! (Jack isn’t in the movie at all, unfortunately Jack in the TV show is clean-shaven… and goes with Jack to everything.)
I could go on and on comparing the Books, the Movie, and the TV Show, but the bottom line is that Where the Brave Call the Movie is more similar than the TV show as its standalone companion.
Plain City Peace (2 Book Series) By Stephanie Reed
I like the book “When the Heart Calls” more than the movie. (Well, I’m a book reviewer. 😉 ) There are some pretty big differences, but overall pretty much the same. (Does that make sense? ;))
I watched the movie, then the serials, then I read the books. I think I enjoyed the movies and TV shows more if I didn’t read the book because I didn’t compare them to the books. :}
And as a fun bonus: here are photos of Jeanette Oke with the cast of her TV show!
