It Project Manager Career – As a Project Management Professional (PMP), PRINCE2® Practitioner, I feel I have an understanding of that field. I’m not a guru or a streaming expert, but I’ve been teaching and practicing project management for about 15 years. One day, my boss asked me to help by creating some training on ITIL®. “It’s IT service management,” he said, “and you already know it.” So I went to pick up the ITIL® v3 books and started reading. Then I discovered that happiness is real, but they are not the same. Maybe that’s why so many people struggle with IT service management techniques like ITIL® or COBIT®.

As an ITIL® 4 professional and process manager as well as a PMP®, both project management and IT service management are near and dear to my heart. Indeed they can and should complement each other, but they differ in their focus and approach.

Agile Project Management Training For A Better Career

It is a process-oriented approach that focuses on delivering IT services that benefit customers. It aligns the delivery of IT services with the needs of the organization using them. For our intents and purposes we focus on the IT side of things and you may hear this as ITSM or IT Service Management.

We can see many things in this table, however, some key differences come into play:

First, service maintenance over time. All projects are temporary efforts to produce unique products, services or results. Project managers focus on individual projects and see them through to completion. The project management process includes project initiation, planning, execution and monitoring.

Performance management is a continuous activity. Although projects have a beginning and an end, jobs continue for a long time before being retired. Services use the same actions over and over again. The IT service management process involves designing, creating, delivering, supporting and managing the entire life cycle of IT services required for a product or service.

Project Management Career Paths: Industries, Salary, And More

Let’s give an example of how this works in an organization. Let’s take Elon Musk’s Tesla company. When Elon and, let’s face it, their design and development team created the Cybertruck or any new model, that initial prototype was a project. It has a beginning and an end. You will definitely create a unique product or result. However, after this project is completed, project management or IT project management is the next step. The product requires frequent feature updates and customer support. Also, remember that the Tesla company has internal systems and services that support various types of cars and even solar roof systems that are installed on buildings. As you can see, they are closely related, but there are real differences between the two different approaches.

Since project management is temporary and short-term, there are many things to plan and manage. Because of this, project management is thought to be more difficult than project management, but both can be challenging.

Another thing that shows differences is key performance indicators or KPIs. For projects, we can see a typical list of KPIs that show whether you are hitting your goals and key results or critical success factors.

For service management, we found that issues such as TCO, performance and standard service level agreements, performance and availability have a large impact. You’ll hear terms like mean time between failure and mean time to restore service. Or perhaps several feature releases and updates.
