Sometimes there is a real difference between what you are good at and what you like to do. Sometimes not, they are the same people: these people are very lucky not to have to work very hard to find a professional career. For those of you who don’t know what to do next or which direction you want to go in, here are some tips on how to find a career path.

Step 1: Quiet your rational mind. I mean, open up to everyone, no matter how much you think a job will do, where you have to move, how it will affect your partner, and all the other things you like to barge in and tell when you’re dreaming about your career goals. If you could do anything, what would you do?

Step 2: Think of yourself. What do you like? What kind of work environment will you thrive in? For example, do you feel energized putting on a suit in the morning and heading into a formal corporate setting, or do you find more satisfaction in a more avant-garde space where you can work casually in an open-plan co-working space? Do you like to socialize or do you prefer to work alone? I absolutely do not like what to do?

Step 3: Start a path… even if it doesn’t lead to your career forever. There is a certain amount of trial and error when it comes to finding a career. So find out what you like and try something nearby. If it doesn’t work, go back to the core starting point of what you love to do and try something different. Over time, you’ll refine your career goals and find a path that best suits your needs. But you have to stick with it and follow your gut. If Covid has put your job, company, or career on a loop, it may be time to think about not only your next move, but a bigger career change as well.

Of course, for many without the connections or the resources, such a move would be impossible, or at least close to it. But for those lucky enough to take advantage of it, technology can help address some of the barriers to transitioning mid-career, especially now, when much of the professional world has moved entirely online out of necessity.

That means we’ll be sharing with you “Three Things,” our tried-and-true 3-step approach to getting started with esports, and an example of what our own process looked like in the past when we were in high school.

See the “sweet spot” in the image above? We’ll help you find your “sweet spot” and hopefully fill it with great esports jobs you can apply to.

At this point, we think it’s important to let you know that not everyone has a “sweet spot” (whether they’re in high school or not), and you should know that there’s nothing wrong with that. While this process helps many students figure out what they want to do and where their careers are headed, it’s not for everyone.

Try to do it alone at first, but don’t be afraid to ask family, friends, or teachers for help if you find it difficult. You’ll be surprised how helpful it can be to get another opinion on something you’re good at!

This sounds super easy, right? But have you ever sat down for a few minutes and wrote down what you think your skills or strengths are on a big list? We guess not…

Why not try it out now and see how you found it? We’ll still be here when you’re done.

See if you can add something to your list with these things in mind, or if you haven’t started from scratch!

Your list may include “hard skills,” which are easily measurable and teachable skills or skill sets, such as the ability to write code, understand foreign languages, communicate through text, draw/design things, and analyze data. Basically, the things you can learn and improve, the more you practice.

Similarly, your list may consist of “soft skills,” which are more difficult-to-measure attributes and personality traits, such as creativity, adaptability, teamwork, leadership, and work ethic.

It would be great if there was already a mix of the two. If not, try filling in some blanks using the example above. By the way, it’s also worth doing your own research on hard and soft skills, as it can help you showcase your strengths to employers.

In our industry, however, many people rely too much on being “players.” This is a huge boost for the app, but it’s important to consider work-related activities that you enjoy. If you want to work on the business side of eSports, without competition, these are the ones you will trust.

If you participate in any activities, clubs, community or sports on or off campus, take a moment to think about why you spend your free time with those too.

This list can be shorter than the first, and that’s okay. It could also be less structured, which is fine too. We just want to get to the point where we can see if there are jobs in esports that allow you to combine what you’re good at with what you love to do. Your own “sweet spot”.

How Rit Can Help You Find The Right Career Path

On Hitmarker, you can find jobs based on your location (country, state, city), the level of experience they require (in years), and the type of contract (full-time, part-time, etc.). However, for the purposes of this three-step plan, we will focus on which sector to work on.

“Department” is what we call specific parts of the esports industry, such as marketing, software engineering, sales/business development, graphic design, and coaching, all of which exist in esports.

You can see a full breakdown of all sectors, along with an explanation of what each sector means, on Hitmarker here. This will be your starting point for identifying which departments may have jobs that overlap with your skills and what you enjoy doing.
