By reading Dans le Lakehouse and attempting to reproduce the content shared here, you assume full responsibility for any injuries or damages you may incur. This can be a difficult task, but it is an important step in protecting your pets and animals from the natural environment. You can trap and kill a problem animal, but that doesn’t stop other wild animals from coming and taking your chickens, roosters, rabbits. As long as there is food readily available (i.e. your unprotected animals), predators will come to eat. The most effective way to protect your pets is to create a predator-proof enclosure, which can be done successfully with little time and effort.
First of all, pets and chickens should stay indoors at night. This is ultimately the safest thing for animals. Even if you free your pets, they should go to a kennel or safe house at night. However, this is the natural instinct of any hunting animal, and you are only facilitating natural behavior.
The Garden Loft Large Walk In Chicken Coop Plans
For free-range chickens, the place to start is the ground. The number one way to prevent predators from digging is to lay hardware cloth (welded wire mesh) over the entire bottom of the fence, making sure it is flush with the fence wall. The bottom of the enclosure can then be covered with soil to prevent your chickens from walking on the fence.
If that is not an option, the next best option is to dig a trench and bury the wire in an L shape for at least 2 feet. This will prevent animals such as foxes or raccoons from digging under the bark and stealing the chickens.
Next, you need to look at the wire you used for the walls. If the wire is as long as the wire can fit in (aka chicken wire – good for keeping chickens, useless for keeping out predators), the animal will be able to catch any chicken standing next to the wire. . The smaller the hole, the better, but no bigger than 1/2”. However, if you want to keep out rodents such as mice or rats, 1/4″ is ideal.
After that it’s up. All pens must have a tip to prevent predators from climbing. As long as the chickens can’t climb up to the top of the coop and are high enough to get out of it, the size of the wire at the top doesn’t matter that much. Chickens should always be brought in at night.
Diy Chicken Coop: Turn An Unused Shed Into A Chicken Coop
For unruly chickens, hot wire (electrical wire) is the ticket. There are many hot wire options, see the pictures to find a successful cop and pen. Wild animals will not be able to climb the fence, and chickens will learn not to touch it. The good thing about this approach is that you can make it as big or as small as you like, letting the big herds have more space and the smaller herds less space.
A very successful chicken coop has coops on wheels, so you can move it around the house, allowing the chickens to always have fresh grass to graze on. For an even more energy-efficient pen, you can solar-power your hot wire. Photos show the highly efficient and environmentally friendly chicken pen at Santa Rosa Junior College’s Shone Farm facility. For added security, tuck your pet inside at night.
The first is to use a small wire mesh that wild animals cannot reach. The smaller the hole, the better, no larger than 1/2″. Make sure the wire is securely attached to the housing structure and has no lip or fingernails that little fingers can get into. extra security Rabbits should be placed in a safe cage at night.
Another way to make predator-proof rabbit hutches is to build a fence around the rabbit hole. This is a good technique if you have more than one rabbit. Then you can make the rabbit cages however you want, as long as there is a roof enclosure. If rabbits are allowed to enter a large enclosure during the day, the wire mesh should be no larger than 1/2 inch. You can replace the second housing with hot wire – see photos of the chicken coop. With hot wire, rabbits should be kenneled at night for extra safety.
Simple Chicken Coop Plans
A predator-proof enclosure is important for dogs that are housed at night or during the day in high-risk areas such as ranches. Most wildlife won’t think of a dog as good food, but may want dog food instead. If the dog defends its food then the wild animal can defend itself and a fight ensues which can injure both the dog and the wild animal.
To secure a dog house, it is best to have a wire bottom so that animals cannot dig underneath. If the kennel is already installed without a wire bottom, you need to dig about 2 meters and lay an L-shaped wire. The small wire is only important if you have small dogs in the cage. If you have a dog the size of a Jack Russell or smaller, then your leash should be no wider than 1/2”. You also need to have a head over the fence to prevent animals from climbing. Again, the small fence is not important unless the small dogs can get close enough to the top for the animal to grab and pull them out.

Check chicken coops for roosters and geese without access to water. If your ducks and geese have access to water, this can be tricky. To keep coyotes away from the cattle pen, you can heat the fence. The hot wire must be high enough that the coyote cannot climb over it. For mountain lion and coyote endangered areas, an enclosed shelter for night use will help protect the animals. Many people also use guard dogs to protect their sheep or goats. Contact us if you have animal predation problems and we can help you find a non-lethal solution.
The number one way to protect your pets is to lock them in a secure enclosure at night. We cannot stress this enough. Birds that stay out at night are actually sitting ducks for hungry wildlife. Be responsible pet sitters and put your pets down at night.
There is always a trade-off between freedom and security. Free range animals have more freedom, but are at risk of hunting and you will lose a few animals every year. If you don’t want to lose animals, you
