I have a lovely 9 year old boy who wants a birthday party but doesn’t want anything traditional. I, as his mom, wanted to make the most of the rest of the summer and entertain all these crazy kids outside. I knew we had to find a party that didn’t cost too much and plan something that would keep them all entertained without too many headaches. We looked on Pinterest, thought about it for a long time, and then it hit us…a night play party, oh why don’t we put a whole bunch of lights in the dark to finish it off. So it’s a glow-in-the-dark party! The result is really perfect.

I was able to order a whole bunch of awesome glow-in-the-dark stuff from Eastern Trading because they not only have regular stuff like glow-in-the-dark necklaces and bracelets, but also glow-in-the-dark ones. is also Glasses and frisbee etc. I put my husband in charge of night games and honestly the kids already knew what they wanted to play so it was pretty easy!

I will share some details that make it work really well. (Here are the ladies at the party…I knew they would join my photo shoot and no boy would like them that much in the first place.) Aren’t they cute?
Tip 1: The party runs from 8:30pm to 10:00pm, which is a good time frame. The sun went down around 8:40 that night, so they had an hour and a half to arrive and play before we started the official night game. Tip 2: We start here and have everyone wear a dark necklace. This is an unexpected benefit. If the kids weren’t wearing these, they might play night games later in the night, but they don’t. They played a game or two and they took them too. Tip 3: We have a bunch of trees in the communal area behind our house, so I put a necklace on each tree hoping the kids won’t touch them. We had no casualties. I think we all survived somehow because the kids play night games without this ;).
Tip 4: If you can, plan around the full moon. We’re just days away from a full moon, so the night is bright! ! ! ! This is really helpful. Tip 4: Cover the display stand with a black tablecloth. Okay, onto the really fun stuff. I have a table on my back porch that is covered with a black plastic tablecloth. This really makes the glow-in-the-dark items stand out. Tip 5: Use a variety of glow-in-the-dark items. Glow in the dark bouncy balls, glow in the dark necklaces, bracelets, frisbees, shadows, pennants, flyers and glitter balls… oh and so many more!

Tip 6: Place all the different items in a clear glass bowl so you can see through them. In each bowl, glow with dark necklaces, then place them inside the bowl to light them up. If you don’t have enough bowls (like I did with the ball, loop it around the table with the ball directly inside. See below.)
Tip 7: This is one of the best tips ever…with a huge spotlight. For us, this light is one of the lights I use when building things in my garage. You can use a powerful flashlight. This is the charging station for all our kids. Regular glow in the dark objects like glasses, balls, and frisbees need to be charged to light. The kids had a great time. I asked my teenage niece Molly to help me. It’s her job and it’s great.
Tip 8: Give the kids these things after they have played for a while, otherwise they will lose them. I gave these to them while it was dark so they could really enjoy it. This is a good move. I gave them a cellophane bag with their name on it… nothing special, I just wrote their name with a marker. I also add their items to the same bag. These shades below make great low light photos.

Tip 9: Write their names on the frisbee or they will never know who theirs is. We did it and it worked great.
Tip 10: This also adds a very interesting effect. If you take a white balloon and stick a glowing bracelet inside, it will make the whole balloon glow. It’s not super super bright, but enough to look cool.
If you have a camera that can take pictures in low light, take advantage of the glow in the dark photos…I love how they turned out.
Tip 11: Place a glow stick in the bottom of the bowl, then place a gummy bear or other clear candy on top. They shine. The effect is stunning. The children were very impressed. Tip 12: Use the spotlight to open presents. It’s really fun. How often do you open presents at night, outside and almost in the dark? It’s also fun.
