Here you’ll be surrounded by paper river birches and dogwoods that make it easy to step back in time to the dense forest and strange mystical beauty of the Ozark Mountains that drew people to Branson. Located on the outskirts of town, Johnson is right in the middle of Branson’s true tourist attraction. No bright lights, no guitars, no loud music, no dinner theater. Just trees, nature, antique wagons and log cabins.
Welcome to Shepherd of the Hills Homestead Adventure Park. Here was this part of Ozark life before the roller coasters of Silver Dollar City rose from the rocky hillside. This was before Johnny Morris’ primitive golf courses gained national attention. This was before the Mabe and Presley families turned a 5-mile stretch of Highway 76 into the live music capital of the universe. This is part of Branson’s story of struggling to survive.
Since first celebrating city status in 1912, Branson has undergone many transformations from a major fishing and outdoor haven to a country music and live theater hub. But his latest change has some wondering if Branson might be losing his roots. Johnson, the newest owner of Shepherd of the Hills Homestead Adventure Park, is one of those affected. “The history of this area is being lost,” he says. “Our story is important. Many people think that Branson started because of country music, but before riding, before lights, a shepherd walked these hills.
In 1907 that pastor was Father Howitt. Howitt is the main character in Harold Bell Wright’s bestseller The Shepherd of the Hills. A circle of love, trust, personal discovery, and family loyalty unravels in the sleepy town of Matton Hollow, a fictional town in the Ozarks. The community’s simple lifestyle in the backwoods drew visitors to wonder if the unknown beauty Wright wrote about actually existed on the rocky hillside. For decades, travelers have flocked to the homestead that inspired the book. It wasn’t until 1957 that the story of The Shepherd of the Hills was recreated as a play and performed in an outdoor amphitheater built on the property.

By this time, Silver Dollar City had begun to take off as Branson’s main attraction, and by 1963, the 1880s amusement park had become Missouri’s number one tourist attraction. The number of visitors to Branson was nothing compared to the tourism boom the city enjoyed in 1991 after 60 Minutes crowned the city as the live music capital of the universe. At the time, stars included Loretta Lynn, Andy Williams and Tony Orlando. When performing in Branson, the city was on the third or fourth line.
Live music was a big draw, and the city’s tourist season began to extend beyond summer. But two decades later, Branson is once again targeting a new tourism destination. This time, sports and outdoor have been given importance. Award-winning golf courses now host nationally televised tournaments, and ziplines stretch through the treetops, while new courses and waterslides attract a whole new set of visitors. Overall, tourist numbers are up, but its reputation as a holiday destination, with tour buses flooding the streets, is a hindrance. “As our season has grown, it has grown with concerts and country music,” says Craig Wescott, CEO and co-owner of The Track Family Fun Parks. “That was great, but it backed us into a corner at one point.”

Wescott grew up in Branson. His father started the family business in 1981. The tourist season was four months long then. “If you opened your doors before mid-May or after mid-September, it was a waste,” Wescott says. “All the attractions were family-oriented, with few musical events.” Today, Branson is about much more than country music, and its tourist season approaches year-round. It’s been a 30-year collaboration between city officials, the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce, the CVB and the city’s business community, but it’s finally paying off.
In fact, 2016 was a banner year for Branson. Around 9 million people are estimated to have visited the city – and not just for the country music. New attractions, including golf, baseball and indoor water parks, have helped boost the city’s tourist numbers, but that doesn’t mean Branson’s job is done to shed its bad reputation. “We’re still learning that people don’t realize we’re more than just music shows,” Wescott says. “Shows are still important to the market, but they’re also changing.”
Grand Ole Music Road Trip
What’s changing — even if at a glacial pace — is the average age of travelers living in the Ozarks. For years, Branson’s visitors ranged in age from 56 to 75 years old. Over the past few years, there has been a decline in the over-75 crowd as the city has turned its attention to a slightly younger demographic. “It’s about family attractions with an outdoor focus,” Wescott says. “It ranges from lakes to new golf courses.” With thousands of hotel rooms and attractions for all ages, Branson is considered a new destination for athletic events, business conferences and national association meetings. In 2015, Branson took a big leap into the field when it hosted the Student and Youth Travel Association, a national organization of tour operators, travel agencies and students.
