The outfit was a huge hit with friends and family (our photo even got a record 75+ likes on Facebook!). The execution was very simple, but we started planning about 3 weeks in advance. My boyfriend and I loved spending our childhoods together and watching old cartoons we used to love, so one day fairies came on TV and when we watched it, I thought, “This is going to be our costume this year. .” I came up with the idea through him, and we decided yes, we’ve been dating long enough that now we’re okay with couple outfits. After making the initial decision, it felt like my boyfriend left all the planning to me. As a poor student who always had time between work and class, I started looking for the cheapest way to make this outfit. In the end, I decided to do everything except the hair dye method, tight tie, and yellow shirt (I don’t have a regular yellow shirt, and I don’t have one!).

Then we visited our local Walgreens and bought 2 white, 1 green and 1 pink hair dye. I think it’s $2 a piece, so I’ll just say the $10 was spent on the hair dye.

I started making wands in which I took some extra colored paper that I lay around and cut 4 stars in yellow. I glued these star shapes together, leaving some space. In this space, I tucked in the yellow paper pieces that emerged during the cutting process to give the wand a more three-dimensional look, and then taped them together. Then I took a piece of black paper and folded it until it looked like an accordion; then I glued them together. Then I glued the stars and stems together and voila! our wand.

To make the crown, I took a piece of yellow paper and literally drew a movement with no order or composition, as Cosmo and Wanda’s crowns always looked a little curved and bumpy. I cut out the pattern I drew and then attached it end to end. Then I took two normal headbands that were scattered around and added a wire I found in my dad’s mechanic shop. I took this wire, wrapped it around the top of the headband in two places, and extended it about 4-5 inches from the starting point. I took scissors and bent the end of this wire into a small curve at the top of the wire. After spending about 20 minutes on this, I went to put the crown on and I realized I had bent the wire the wrong way and told you that the wire is no longer moving. After I fixed it in vain, I gave up and decided to glue the wires to the inside of the crown. efficient! It wasn’t until later that I found out that I was using so little tape, that after many frustrating attempts to fix my boyfriend and I’s crowns (on halloween night), I used sturdy Scotch tape to remove them, Enough to hurt your wallet and stop falling off the wires.

Originally wanted to buy wings, but found out that fake wings are expensive! Jesus! I really don’t want to pay $15+ for some shit wings, so am looking for ways to make my own. It turns out that a lot of people make their own wings for this or that, so I came up with a lot of results. After reading how a few different people made these wings themselves, I realized they had basically the same idea: hangers, pantyhose and tape or super glue. I took wire hangers (you need three for each set of wings) and bent the first one into an oval; I made this with three other hangers, using the first as a guide, so they were roughly the same shape. I took 5 and 6 hangers and separated them, then shaped them into wings and joined the ends together. I took two ellipses and glued them together. Then I decided the tape might not hold up, and decided to break out my hot glue gun (the wires were apparently thin, so I applied glue to the top of the hanger as they touched). After hot bonding, I added a layer of tape around them. Then I took the third hanger and I shaped it into a wing shape and taped it to the center of the wing. I repeated this process to create the second pair. Then I took the pantyhose I bought at the local thrift store (I didn’t mention it above right? Well, I bought about 4 pairs for $1 at the old junk store, so the wings totaled $5). Anyways , after a lot of fighting and confusion, I used more glue and tape along the way to attach these tights to the needles. Pooh. I chose to make a clever little thing to add a little sparkle to them.

Now. Let’s talk a little bit about this hair coloring/hair coloring process. I, with long hair, decided to use an old wig I bought at the drugstore the day after Halloween last year (why should I buy this? Who really knows?) instead of laboriously trying to make all my hair pink Enough color, and Wanda’s famous hairstyle. The end result is not a good idea. Fast forward to Halloween; I decided to start prepping (dot!) early that day and after get off work. So I went home and showered, washed my face, and put on makeup (I did my usual makeup foundation, put on false lashes, pink blush, and added some yellow eyeshadow). After blow-drying my hair from the aforementioned shower, I decided it was time for a wig. I spent half an hour pinning my hair in one way or another so my long hair wouldn’t be visible under my relatively short wig. at last! ended. I grabbed the wig from the closet floor, threw it in the mirror above my head, and wow, this thing has seen better times. It was twisted, hair flying all over the place; I decided I could save it.

No, I can not. This thing can’t be saved. Damn, why didn’t I at least check it out before deciding to use it? Ok it doesn’t matter; new plans. I know about curling irons. So I unwrapped my hair and curled the ends as usual. When it came time to do Wanda, I was embarrassed. After searching online to no avail (man, it’s a very unusual outfit), my boyfriend suggested using some hairspray and blow-drying it right after applying it. Apparently he did this on a spiritual day in high school to grow alfalfa sprouts, and I think you’ll find yourself learning something in high school! Ha ha. Anyway I try his method, you know what! it works. Half a bottle of hairspray and lots of drying afterwards and I have a decent Wanda lock. Yes!

Then it’s time to dye your hair. If you don’t quite understand why we bought white, it’s an undertone. My boyfriend and I both have black hair and I know my hair won’t turn pink and I’m not entirely sure if my boyfriend will turn green. First off, I volunteered my boyfriend because it seemed fun to spray his head with these. So I sprayed my boyfriend’s head white with this very, very cold spray as we were standing in front of the apartment complex and cars kept passing by and it had a strong smell (what’s that smell? Honestly, I don’t know.. ..), bug, stuff. It wouldn’t be described as pleasant anyway. When it dries, I spray the green spray and spray it liberally all over my head, even accidentally getting it in my ears! He was very annoyed by it, especially after the ominous giggles in his mouth after I was done. It was my turn, and I was already terrified that the rewards might soon come to me.
