That’s all we see of Stacie for the rest of the season, but we’re sure she’ll be back and bringing all the drama with her.

In 2019 Virgin River took over Netflix in December, and the story of nurse/midwife Melinda Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) immediately captured our hearts. Mel arrives in a small, tight-knit town looking for a fresh start, but for most of her first year her past remains a mystery, revealed only through a series of dramatic flashbacks.
Rampant speculation begins in the town’s rumor mill (ahem, Hope) as Mel grows closer to local bar owner Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson). Notably, she continues to wear her wedding ring, leaving everyone wondering what happened to Mel’s husband Mark. [ADMINISTRATORS!]

Season 1 revealed Mel’s tragic backstory. She and her sailor/doctor husband Mark (Daniel Gillies) are happily expecting a baby, only to have the pregnancy terminate at birth. As a result, Mel suffers from depression. A couple has been unsuccessfully treated for infertility. Mel wants to continue treatment, but Mark is ready to stop after seeing the toll it is taking on his wife and their marriage. They get into an argument while Mark is in the car, and he takes his eyes off the road and gets into a terrible car accident, eventually dying in the hospital. Mel feels responsible for these tragic events.
Season 2 opens with Mel struggling with her feelings for Jack as the one-year anniversary of Mark’s death approaches. Things pick up when Mark’s sister Stacie (Melinda Dahl) unexpectedly arrives. She is engaged and wants Mel to return her engagement ring, which was a family heirloom.
Although Mark’s character is not in season 3 or 4, his presence is very much felt. Mel had her embryos frozen before Mark’s death and is undergoing infertility treatment after her breakup with Jack at the end of Season 3. In the fourth season, Mel and Jack reunite and Mel is pregnant, but she does not know whether Mark or Jack is the father.

Virgin River (s04e09): Bombshells Summary
Mel is shocked to learn that her move to Virgin River to escape her past is not what she expected; he has difficulty walking in the fresh, unused water where he was dumped. Mel is now engaged to Jack Sheridan and expecting his baby girl.
Little is known about Melinda’s early history, except that she left Los Angeles to escape painful memories of her past. It is later revealed that Mel has trouble conceiving, which negatively affects her marriage to Mark a year later. After the fifth failed attempt to conceive, Mel and Mark disagreed about further IVF treatment and Mark wanted to terminate it; But Mel didn’t want to give up treatment because she wanted to have her own child with Mark.
On the night of Mark’s death, the two argued over whether or not to continue treatment. Mel told Mark that he thought they should take a break and when Mark took his eyes off the road they were both hit by a truck and Mark was fatally injured and died in hospital.
Although she begins to grow closer to Jack and eventually their relationship, Mel struggles to lose Mark, especially as his one-year anniversary approaches. Mel believes she’ll never make it, but she’s helped by Hope, who advises her on her shared history of losing a husband.

Things get complicated for Mel when Mark’s sister Stacey arrives in Virgin River and asks for her engagement ring, which Mark will return. Stacey tells Mel that it was their grandmothers and Mark would have wanted it to stay in the family, but Mel scolds her saying that she is family – even if Mark is dead. Mel struggles with the idea for a while, but finally decides that the ring is hers and she won’t give it back.
Tired of her current life in Los Angeles and wanting to escape the pain of her past memories, Melinda answers an ad for a midwife in the small rural town of Virgin River. However, Melinda is shocked by what she finds along the way and realizes that the small country town is not what she suspected.
Mel struggles with her newfound friendship with the town’s doctor, Vernon Mullins. Vernon is adamant that he doesn’t need help and refuses to let Mel administer medication, even in emergencies, in his absence until he proves himself competent. Finally, Mel feels that Vernon is treating her like an assistant, and delivers a message to Hope McCrea, stating that she will remain in the position until another is found, but will soon leave.
In the end, Mel is convinced to stay and prove herself to Vernon when the family is poisoned by Calvin’s pesticide. Mel helps Vernon figure out why, and Vernon believes he now has a chance to adapt; asks her to stay on as a Virgin River nurse and adds her name to the field practice sign.
