“I’ve always been a neat freak and she was kind of a messy person,” the singer admitted, before noting that her sister has gotten better at cleaning up after herself as she’s gotten older.
“It’s gotten a lot more refined,” Parton added. “But I think a lot of it was because she was just so creative and she just had so much going on in her head.”

In an interview with Playboy magazine in 1978, the singer revealed that she and her siblings always found ways to have fun. One of the activities they often did together was making homemade makeup from household items.
“I always wanted to wear makeup. I painted my lips and there was nothing dad could do,” Parton said of the antiseptic liquid, Mercurochrome, that she used to redden her lips. “He couldn’t get over it . Lacquer your lips and these little bottles [were] perfect for contouring your lip line. Then I would do it and wipe it off and my dad would say, “Come on, let me take that lipstick off you!” I said very calmly, “It’s my natural color, Dad.” He is such a bull. When we wanted eyebrows, we got burnt matches. . .you could get them wet and do your eyebrows and whatever.

Parton also revealed what it was like sharing a bed with her younger siblings, admitting that they often peed on her in her sleep.

“The kids pee on me every night,” she said. “There were so many of us. We slept three and four to the bed. I washed every night and as soon as I went to bed my children were wet and I had to get up in the morning and do the same. [But] that was it only warmth we knew in winter. It was almost a pleasure—peeing—for it was so cold. Lord. It was as cold in the room as it was outside.”
Dolly Parton’s childhood is something she has never shied away from talking about over the years. Even this story of her younger sibling wetting the bed is one she has shared many times throughout her long career.
While the memory is fun for the hitmaker to look back on, Stella Parton didn’t quite feel the same way when Dolly first went public with the embarrassing confession.
“I was sitting out in the audience and I was dressed,” Stella said (according to Classic Country Music) when she heard Dolly share the story at a show in Las Vegas. “And he got up on stage in front of everyone and told them we used to pee the bed when we were little.”
